Illex squid not only has high economic value, but also plays an important role in the marine ecosystem. It is a bridge for high-trophic marine organisms to obtain nutrition from primary producers, and an important channel for energy transfer and conversion in the marine food web.
Illex squid is mainly distributed in tropical and temperate shallow seas. Illex squid is often active in the middle and upper layers of shallow seas, and its vertical movement range can reach more than 100 meters. It feeds on krill, sardines, cockerel, and small male fish, and is itself a prey target for ferocious fish. Eggs mature in batches and are produced in batches. The eggs are enclosed in colloidal ootheca. Each ootheca contains several to hundreds of eggs depending on the species. The number of eggs laid by different species is also very different, from hundreds to to tens of thousands.
Illex squid generally live in groups. Like most species in the animal kingdom, squid are a matriarchal society. During the spring and summer mating and spawning periods, two or three larger female squids take the lead in collective mating. All Illex squid are happy at night, so when coastal fishermen catch them, they use steam lights to lure them to the surface of the water, and then use nets to quickly block the escape direction from behind and catch them. Live squid have a large number of pigmented "bubbles" on the surface of their skin, and these "bubbles" change with mood changes.
