Its sides are flat, its cross-section is oval, and its dorsal and ventral margins are slightly arc-shaped and raised; its caudal peduncle is short and thin, and there are two small raised ridges at the base of the caudal fin on both sides. Head medium and large, slightly sideways. Snout blunt, slightly larger than eye diameter. Eyes large, located near the dorsal edge of the head, with well-developed adipose eyelids. Mouth large, terminal, obliquely cleft; upper and lower jaws are of equal length, with a row of fine teeth, and upper teeth are often erupted; hoe bone, palatine bone and tongue have no teeth. Gill rakers pinnate, with 30-46 gill rakers on upper and lower branches of first gill arch. Body and cheeks covered with round scales; lateral line complete, extending along dorsal side to base of caudal fin. The first dorsal fin has hard spines, far from the starting point of the second dorsal fin, and there are 5-6 separate fins behind it; the anal fin is the same shape as the second dorsal fin; the caudal fin is deeply forked. Indian mackerel body back blue green, with 1-2 rows of black spots, body silvery white belly. There is a dark spot on the side of the body near the lower edge of the pectoral fin.
Indian mackerel lives in waters between 20 and 90 meters. It swims fast and is agile and lively. It is phototaxis but hates strong light. Omnivorous, it often eats plankton on the surface of the water with its mouth wide open, and often swims with trevally fish.
